This report compares the results of the 1996 industrial water use survey to the results of previous surveys. Results indicate that the manufacturing sector has reduced its total water intake by 17 percent since 1991, although consumption rates (the amount of water lost during production) have gone up 2 percent. In contrast, the mineral extraction sector has increased its total water intake by 42 percent since 1991. In addition, discharges of untreated water continue to be a concern. In thermal power generation, water recirculation increased from 17 percent of intake in 1991 to 41 percent in 1996.
