"Since 1922, the Federal government has erected plaques and monuments on the recommendation of the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada to commemorate persons, places or events which are of national historic significance. Locations where such commemorations take place are called national historic sites. There are now almost 800 of these sites in Canada, of which more than 200 are in Ontario. This booklet is intended to introduce the reader to those elements of Canadian national historical heritage singled out for commemoration in Ontario.
