"In this report we intend to discuss the various methods of treating the adverse physical and psychological conditions resulting immediately from non-medical drug use, as well as the severe disturbances of normal functioning caused by prolonged use and resulting mainly from physical or psychological dependence. In the first part of this section we shall examine the concepts of sickness and treatment. This will be followed by a brief description of those conditions which call for immediate medical intervention. Finally, we shall outline the various goals and kinds of therapeutic intervention"--Introduction, p. [1].
