Adaptive null steering for interference rejection is reviewed. The influence of antenna configuration on beam control performance is noted. An experimental study of an IF adaptive beam controller was undertaken. Advantages and disadvantages of IF analog implementation of beam control are discussed. Circuit components required for beam steering and control are also reviewed. Bandwidth-efficient modulations are important due to the increasing demand for communication services and the fact that the available bandwidth is limited. For reasons of efficiency the power amplifier in radio communications equipment is usually operated near power saturation resulting in a non-linear amplification. Any amplitude variations in the input to this amplifier will thus result in AM/AM and AM/PM distortion as well as spectral spreading. It is thus desirable for the input to the amplifier to have a constant envelope. At present, the area of bandwidth-efficient modulations with a constant envelope is the subject of much research"--Introduction, page 1.Radio frequency modulationReceivers and reception.Acoustic surface wave filters.Modulation de fréquenceRécepteurs et réception.Filtres à ondes acoustiques de surface.Canada. The last technique as applied to data transmission is studied in this report. The primary objective of spectrally efficient data transmission is to transmit data at a specified rate and error performance in as small a channel bandwidth as possible. Un modèle de simulation du système cellulaire ayant un système d'attribution des canaux hybride et la discipline Erlang-C, est développé et étudié. Les mesures de performance de base, telles que la probabilité que tous les canaux soient occupés, le temps moyen d'attente pour les appels qui demandent le service, et le nombre moyenne des tampons utilisés pour ces appels, sont obtenus. Des conclusions sont atteintes au sujet de la performance de la partition des canaux entre fixes et dynamiques. The results for calcium, magnesium and alkalinity were good even though the natural sample was unstable for these three parameters. The precision for calcium and total hardness was much better by titration than by atomic absorption. Precision and accuracy were good for sodium and potassium, and precision was about the same whether atomic absorption or flame emission photometry was used. Precision for nitrate at low levels was only fair by any of the variety of methods used, although the cadmium reduction method was satisfactory at higher levels. Sulfate was also determined by a variety of methods, but precision was satisfactory for most of them. Chloride was determined with acceptable precision. The natural sample was supersaturated with carbonates and therefore was unstable with respect to calcium, magnesium and alkalinity. It was stable, however, with respect to the other parameters and the synthetic samples were stable with regard to all parameters tested over a three-month period of storage. Precision and accuracy were not seriously adversely affected by either sample instability or long-distance shipment"--Summary, page v.Issued also in print format.Trace elements in waterAnalysis.Water quality.Oligoéléments dans l'eauAnalyse.EauQualité.Canada. Copper and cadmium are determined frequently by most participants in this study, and results for these two metals were satisfactory as for a previous study using standard atomic absorption techniques. Precision for aluminum was fair, with a non-zero blank reading, likely picked up from the glassware. Most participants determine aluminum rarely; some had switched methods recently. Satisfactory results for strontium were obtained by seven laboratories using atomic absorption and by five laboratories using flame emission spectroscopy. The automated method used by the Water Quality Branch (WQB) demonstrated greatly improved precision and accuracy for mercury compared to a previous study, whereas the variety of manual methods used produced many outliers"--Abstract, page v.Issued also in print format.Includes abstracts in English and French.Trace elements in waterAnalysis.Water quality.Oligoéléments dans l'eauAnalyse.EauQualité.Canada. The first chapter contains an introduction to and summary of the material detailed throughout the report. The second and third chapters review the literature on ortho-phthalic acid esters (PAEs) in the environment and their effects on human health. By combining information on exposure and toxicity, an attempt is made to assess the present hazard to human health and the environment posed by observed levels of PAEs in the environment. In the fourth chapter, the production and use of PAEs in Canada is analyzed for the year 1973. The fifth chapter covers the releases of PAEs to the environment from production and processing, and from the use and disposal of articles that contain PAEs. Estimates indicate that in 1973 releases from production and processing activities comprised approximately 20% of the total, whereas use and disposal activities accounted for the remaining 80%. These releases have been presented in terms of major drainage basins to give the data more regional significance. The sixth chapter reviews the chemistry and properties of PAEs, the major processes used in producing and fabricating flexibilized (plasticized) poly (vinyl chloride) and the use of related chemicals such as phthalic anhydride and terephthalic acid. The final chapter summarizes the conclusions and recommendations based on the findings of this study. Throughout the report, the data are clarified through the use of a material flow chart, tables, and maps"--Abstract, page vii.Issued also in print format.Includes abstracts in English and French.Phthalate estersCanada.Esters phtaliquesCanada.Canada. This routine reads magnetic tape containing records of a tipping bucket rain gauge and the height of water level over a measuring weir. The routine converts the number of rain gauge tips into rainfall intensity, and the height of water level to runoff flow rate by using an experimental rating curve.
