Cover image

The National Archives of Canada maintains the largest collection of works of art relating to Canadian history, encompassing some 200,000 paintings, drawings, prints, posters, cartoons, medals and other related visual documents. The holdings date from the sixteenth century, and the majority are still in almost pristine condition. This catalogue is intended to acquaint the public with a treasured part of this national heritage, a selection of the paintings, drawings and prints acquired over the last twenty years. This magnificently illustrated publication presents to us the human face of history through the reproductions of paintings, drawings and prints. The texts accompanying each reproduction put each work in context and present valuable and interesting information on not only the historical context of each, but also information on the artists and their life and work. Contains black and white reproductions, 13 color plates.
