"Three main events have occurred since the beginning of popular environmental interest in Lake Erie over 30 years ago. First, the near demise of the walleye in the 1950s and 1960s, resulted in development of fisheries management techniques to ensure recovery and attempt sustainability. Second, loadings of toxic chemicals and phosphorus were controlled under the Canada-U.S. Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement (GLWQA). Third, an invasion of exotic species became apparent in the 1980s and continues today"--Abstract.
