Electrical resistivity measurements on western Canadian coals / Lewis H. King, Fuels and Mining Practice Division. : M38-1/117-1963E-PDF

"Field resistivity measurements were made in advance of a coal face to determine the probability of encountering outbursts as the coal was mined. This field work led to the measuring of resistivity on laboratory specimens in order to ascertain the influence of adsorbed methane, carbon dioxide, and moisture. The laboratory work shows that moisture, but not adsorbed gases, can account for the large resistivity fluctuations encountered in the field. The field measurements apparently detect fracturing in the coal ahead of an advancing face when the fractures are saturated with moisture, but outbursts cannot be predicted from the measurements"--Abstract.
