"Lack of access to appropriate and affordable housing in Inuit Nunangat is a national crisis.In 2016, over half (51.7%) of Inuit in Inuit Nunangat lived in crowded housing comparedto 8.5% percent of non-Indigenous Canadians. In addition, more than 70 per cent of thecommunities in Inuit Nunangat do not have a safe shelter for women and childrenexperiencing family violence and where they do exist, they are over-burdened.2 Thehousing crisis, as demonstrated by consistently poor socio-economic outcomes, continuesto represent a major impediment to healthy living, education and employment for Inuit"--Introduction, page 2.
