The physical consequences of wave breaking in deep water / M.A. Donelan and M.L. Banner. : En13-5/91-132E-PDF

"The breaking of waves at the surface of natural water bodies has important effects on many physical processes. Among these are: interfacial gas transfer, enhancement of wind stress, mixing of surface pollutants, changes in optical emissivity and microwave reflectivity, formation of bubble clouds and the generation of sound, dissipation of surface waves. These processes are themselves an integral part of the general problem of monitoring and predicting the short and long term evolution of the coupled ocean atmosphere system, i.e., weather and climate prediction. This review paper outlines the current understanding of wave breaking in deep water and its physical consequences. In addition, it points out the areas where future research efforts are most likely to be fruitful"--Management Perspective.
