"Cod (Gadus morhua L.) have been fished in the Gulf of St. Lawrence for more than a century during the ice-free summer months. Prior to the mid-forties the fishery was primarily by baited hook or jigger, and it was not until otter trawls were first introduced by Canadian fishermen that any significant changes took place in this fishery. The introduction of foreign otter trawls in the mid-fifties had a major effect on the fishery"--Introduction.
