"The emergence of the digital economy in recent years has presented challenges to the measurement of official statistics. Evolving consumption patterns, such as the increasing popularity of online shopping and the rise of new consumer goods and services have required the Consumer Price Index (CPI) to adapt to maintain accuracy inmeasuring inflation dynamics. New goods and services are being incorporated into the CPI basket, and collection methods are being updated to mirror the evolving consumer behaviour of Canadians as e-commerce takes an increasingly large role in the retail landscape"--Introduction, page 4.
