"Metal mining has been an important industry in the Fraser basin since the 19th century. Like every industry, mining has generated waste products, such as tailings and waste rock, which contain some naturally occurring and potentially toxic elements found in the metal ore, and toxic elements and compounds introduced during the various stages during the extraction of the metals from the ore"--Summary and conclusions, page 10.
