The Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) provide the scientific basis for the development of food guidelines in both the United States and Canada, offering individuals a means to achieve a balanced diet by eating a variety of foods from different food groups. This publication provides a foundation for understanding how and why the DRIs (Dietary Reference Intakes) were developed, reviews the function of each nutrient in the human body, summarizes the known effects of inadequate and excessive intakes, describes how a nutrient may be related to chronic disease or developmental abnormalities, and provides the indicator of adequacy for determining nutrient requirements.
