Maritime visual analytics prototype : final report / Valérie Lavigne.: D68-2/182-2014E-PDF

An analysis of maritime domain challenges at the Regional Joint Operation Centres (RJOCs) and Maritime Security Operations Centres (MSOCs) revealed that visual analytics has the potential to enable better detection and analysis of marine threats. The Maritime Visual Analytics Prototype (MVAP) was developed to explore the use of visual analytics techniques for visual anomaly detection and situation analysis in the maritime domain. The capabilities of the MVAP are provided by a series of specialized visual analysis tools, leveraging both vessel track data and non-kinetic information. The potential for operational deployment of the MVAP was assessed employing a user jury methodology with sixteen marine security analysts and specialists. Based on the positive validation of trial results, it is recommended that the MVAP be made available to MSOC developers so they can turn it into an operational tool.
