      <marc:subfield code="a">"To complement the research of the Foundation, and to apply it to the field of flame-source pollution, the Canadian Combustion Research Laboratory has designed a 1-meter dia. x 4.25-meter long, liquid-cooled tunnel furnace. This facility will serve both to study combustion aerodynamics and the formation of pollutants in flames. The furnace is now almost ready for use, and the paper gives details of its construction and instrumentation. It is designed to burn pulverized coal, oil or gas at an input rate of two million Btu/hr (500,000 kg. cal/hr). The furnace is constructed as a series of calorimeters, making it possible to measure the heat absorbed by each 6 in. (15 cm) increment of furnace length. A full-length slot with a series of water-cooled doors permits probing even when the furnace is under pressure. The first project planned for the new furnace is an investigation of the factors affecting the formation of nitrogen oxides in oil flames. The theory of NO formation is reviewed, as is the current literature on measured levels of NO from combustion equipment. The tremendous potential for misleading results due to interacting factors is pointed out, and the major parameters for the proposed program are outlined"--Summary, p. 1.</marc:subfield>
