The development of an improved steel for the production of propulsion shafting for naval vessels / R.D. McDonald & W.A. Morgan, Physical Metallurgy Division.: M38-1/72-1960E-PDF
"This report covers an investigation of properties obtainable in material currently in use for the production of propulsion shafting for naval vessels, and of the possible improvements attainable by increased manganese/carbon ratios and with low alloy additions. The initial purpose of the program was the improvement of impact properties without sacrificing other mechanical properties attainable in the currently used material. The results indicate that a very considerable improvement is obtainable, with accompanying improvements in tensile and fatigue strength and without any appreciable increase-in fatigue notch sensitivity when subjected to rotational bending fatigue stresses"--Abstract, page i.
