"This synopsis reviews biological information on the Black Crappie (Pomoxis nigromaculatus) in support of a risk assessment evaluating the impacts of a potential range expansion in Canada with particular focus on its potential effects on the Saint John River watershed in New Brunswick. Due to widespread introductions throughout the United States for recreational fishing starting in the 1800s, Black Crappie's native distribution is poorly known but is thought to be eastern-central North America. It is now almost ubiquitous in the United States and is also found in British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, Québec, and New Brunswick. Black Crappie prefer clear, slow-moving, heavily vegetated waters, but can persist under a wide variety of conditions. Young Black Crappie are planktivorous, adding invertebrates, and eventually fish as they grow. While they do show food preferences as a species, Black Crappie are opportunistic and will often feed on whatever is readily available. Their varied diet at different life stages means introduced young Black Crappie can cause impacts on herbivorous fish species through competition for food resources, while older fish can cause impacts through predation. In New Brunswick, Black Crappie are most likely to negatively impact Yellow Perch (diet overlap and strong predation) and White Perch (diet overlap)"--Abstract, page vii.
