"The calculation of the spreading rate of materials and their concentration in natural rivers is usually based on solutions of the mass conservation equation. Analytical solutions exist for uniform flows in straight channels while more complicated stream geometries or flow conditions can be handled by numerical methods. However, the accuracy of these solutions depends on having correct values for the turbulent mixing coefficients"--Introduction, page 1.
