| 520 | |a"Several approaches were employed by NRBS to characterize the organochlorines and other contaminants entering the NRBS river systems from municipal, industrial (pulp mill and nonpulp mill) sources and from long-range atmospheric transport. These included literature reviews, compilations of information available in historical governmental records on municipal and industrial discharges of liquid effluent to the NRBS area (SENTAR 1996 and McCubbin et al.1996), field studies in the Hinton to Whitecourt reach of the Athabasca River in 1992 and 1993 (Crosley 1996a,c), and broad spectrum analyses for non-routine contaminants in industrial and municipal effluent samples (Johnson et al. 1996). Additional information from the scientific literature was used to characterize the long-range atmospheric transport of contaminants and to develop source-specific contaminant profiles. The location, treatment technology and waste disposal methods of all licenced municipal and non-pulp mill effluent dischargers in the Peace, Athabasca and Slave River basins were summarized for the NRBS by SENTAR (1996)"--Summary. |
