Occurrence of juvenile Pacific salmon in the southern and central coastal waters of British Columbia / by Lisa D. Siemens, Joy Wade.: Fs97-6/3686E-PDF

"Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is responsible for making science-informed decisions to protect aquatic ecosystems. This includes the protection of ecologically and economically important species, such as Pacific salmon. While information exists on Pacific salmon occurrence in certain coastal waters of British Columbia (BC), the monthly occurrence of juveniles remains largely undocumented. This study aims to address this knowledge gap by investigating the temporal occurrence of juvenile Pacific salmon on the BC coast using existing datasets and publications. Data were sourced from primary publications and grey literature (i.e., DFO datasets, publicly available datasets, and consultant reports). The consolidated occurrence data for each anadromous Pacific salmon species are presented by month for each of seven zones, covering south and central coastal waters of BC. The results provide evidence that juveniles of all Pacific salmon species were present in most months of the year in most zones. However, data was limited for some months, particularly December and January, so juvenile presence in those cases remains uncertain. The study does not confirm fish absence or provide abundance or population information. This research was conducted to compile existing information that can serve as a citable resource for informing future DFO applications"--Abstract, page iv.
