520 |a"Sediments beneath salmon aquaculture cages may receive a variety of compounds including chemotherapeutants used to treat diseases or parasitic infestations. Emamectin benzoate (EMB), a drug used in finfish aquaculture for controlling sea lice in salmon, can accumulate in benthic habitats alongside its breakdown products which include the potentially more toxic metabolite desmethyl emamectin benzoate (DES). To contribute to our currently limited understanding of the potential metabolites of EMB other than DES in marine sediments, we undertook a pilot study of metabolomic changes in sediments after they were spiked with EMB over a 14-day incubation period. In both abiotic (autoclaved) and biotic (non-autoclaved) sediments considered separately, we found no significant change with time in the overall composition of detected metabolites although concentrations of some compounds (besides EMB and DES) varied significantly over time"--Abstract, page vii.
