"Multi-year environmental monitoring and research can support effective resource management decisions. However, collecting long-term environmental data can be time consuming and expensive, which often limits a government's ability to collect this information at meaningful spatial and temporal scales. Collaborating with community stewardship groups on long-term environmental monitoring and research initiatives offers a potential means to address the limits of government science capacity. Moreover, previous case studies have shown that community-gathered environmental data can be comparable to professional data for certain parameters and with proper guidance. However, at present, there remains a paucity of guidance for government agencies and stewardship groups on how best to collaborate"--Abstract, page iv.
