Projected water temperature and exposure indices for adult sockeye salmon migration in the Okanagan Watershed, 2010-2099 / Howard W. Stiff and Patrick L. Thompson.Fs97-6/3793E-PDF

"Rising river temperatures are increasingly constraining the upstream migration of adult salmon in interior Pacific Northwest rivers. This study quantifies projected changes in water temperature and the occurrence of migration-limiting thermal conditions along the terminal freshwater corridor of Okanagan Sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) in the Okanagan-Okanogan River system (British Columbia, Canada; Washington State, USA). Daily mean water temperatures at three mainstem sites and the Similkameen River tributary were estimated using a generalized additive model relating air to water temperature, calibrated with observed data. Future projections were derived from statistically downscaled air temperatures from ten CMIP5 climate models under moderate (RCP4.5) and high (RCP8.5) emissions scenarios, and assessed for the June-September migration season relative to a 1971-2000 baseline. …"--Abstract, page vii.
