| 520 | 3 |a"The marine ecosystem of Baffin Bay not only represents an area of scientific interest, it is also one of economic, ecological, and cultural importance. Economically, the region hosts commercial fisheries for Greenland Halibut (Reinhardtius hippoglossoides) and Northern and Striped Shrimp (Pandalus borealis and P. montagui, respectively). Baffin Bay also contains conservation areas such as Davis Strait and Disko Fan, and the Tallurutiup Imanga National Marine Conservation Area (TINMCA), targeted to preserve ecological biodiversity and/or cultural heritage. Arctic marine ecosystems have been changing, and due to the rapidity of these changes, consistent studies assessing anthropogenic and climate-change related impacts on key marine habitat components are important. This is likewise true for the Arctic marine ecosystem of Baffin Bay, and consistent sampling is critical for a better understanding of the region's current state, of the ongoing changes, and of these changes' potential economic impacts on fisheries. The KEBABB (Knowledge and Ecosystem Based Approach in Baffin Bay) program was developed to conduct regular sampling operations in the Baffin Bay region. This program aims to integrate physical, chemical, and biological oceanographic data to provide baseline ecosystem characterization in support of sustainable fisheries management and to assess changes along spatial gradients and interannually.
