5203 |a"We sought a practical, inexpensive way to measure water motion, as for example, mean velocities at asalmon farm. The method tested was based on the dissolution rate of pre-cast gypsum cylinders of ~250-g mass, expressed as the percentage loss of weight of each cylinder (F%). F% is given as velocity or cumulative flow for a specified exposure period based on data from flume calibration. Comparisons made between gypsum dissolution rate methods and standard current meters (S4 and acoustic doppler current profiler) showed that the gypsum dissolution method overestimates mean velocities. It was concluded that the gypsum dissolution method cannot provide a measure of mean velocity in the well mixed waters of the Bay of Fundy"--Abstract, page iii.
