"A survey of red sea urchin populations in the Larsen Harbour and Kingkown Inlet areas, Banks Island, parts of Pacific Fishery Management (PFM) Area 5, was conducted in July and August 1997. A total of 57 randomly placed transects were surveyed by SCUBA divers. Densities and biomass were estimated on a per PFM sub-area basis. Estimated mean density ranged from 0.60 to 3.44 urchins per m², overall mean density was 223 urchins per m². Estimated mean biomass ranged from 186.0 to 1088.6g per m² and overall mean biomass was 743.9g per m². Overall, 16.4% of the total urchins measured were ≤50mm test diameter (TD) whereas 47.8% were of legal size (≥100mm TD) for the commercial fishery"--Abstract, page iii.
