5203 |a"This document is a useful planning tool for management and conservation needs, whether from the perspective of the Oceans Act or of related objectives such as habitat protection, integrated fisheries management plan preparation or ecosystemic management of resources. With the help of many stakeholders (fishers, fishery officers and scientists), a representative portrait of the information currently available on major marine resources in Prince Edward Island and the Gulf region of Nova Scotia was developed. The information is presented in the form of regionally significant habitats for certain marine species. A total of 35 sites are identified and are presented in the form of fact sheet, 28 habitats for one species (species-habitat grouping) and 7 habitats for multiple species, while another 31 sites are only presented on maps, being considered essential to a lesser degree. The term regionally significant habitat is used to characterise each species-habitat grouping representative of a vital habitat for a particular species. These areas are essential for various crucial stages in the life cycle of the species (spawning ground, rearing area, feeding ground, migration area, etc.), or they constitute a major area of concentration, particularly for mostly sedentary species, such as molluscs, for which the boundaries of the area would remain relatively constant from one year to another. Fish concentration areas are generally not included, with the exception of those associated with one particular life stage (larva or juvenile) or a threatened species (cod)"--Abstract, page iii.
