| 520 | 3 |a"The counting fence on Black Creek was operated between April 6th and June 9th, 2009, to enumerate and tag Coho smolt out-migration. During the spring program, a total 68,448 smolts were captured, and sampled, of which 19,109 (28%) were successfully coded-wire tagged and released. A total of 19,016 smolts were estimated as effectively tagged after applying the short term tag loss rate of 0.65%. The out-migration was 96% age 1 smolts and 4% age 2s. The adult fence was operated from October 16th to November 16th, and spawn surveys were conducted from November 10th to December 7th. A total of 2,584 large adults (male to female ratio of 1:1.5) were enumerated, and 2,390 (~93%) were tagged for mark-recovery escapement estimation. 732 jacks were enumerated. CWTs were detected in 202 adults and 8 jacks, indicating a low (~8.5%) detection rate. The single-census Petersen mark-recapture population estimate for adult Coho was 3758±136 fish. The mode of the Bayesian population estimate for adult Coho escapement was 3,536, with a 95% highest probability density of 3343 – 3,788. Exploitation rate was assumed to be equivalent to the aggregated estimate derived elsewhere for Vancouver Island Georgia Strait Coho: 3.8%. Marine survival was estimated to be 3.73% for Black Creek adult Coho, a substantial increase from 2008 (0.76%) which was the lowest on record"--Abstract, page vii. |
