A questionnaire survey of sport fishing in the Yellowknife and Hay River areas, Northwest Territories, 1979 / by M.R. Falk.: Fs97-4/1584E-PDF
"A hand-out questionnaire survey of sport fishing in the Yellowknife and Hay River areas, North-West Territories, was carried out from May to September, 1979. The purpose of the survey was to determine locations fished, number of fish caught and retained, hours fished and fishing quality. The questionnaire method was used because a roving creel census of sport fishing in these areas was not practical. Eight hundred forty-five and 206 questionnaires were distributed in the Yellowknife and Hay River areas respectively, with 168 responses (16%) from both areas. Fishing quality was generally rated as fair to poor (54%). Angler-success (catch per angler-hour) for the major sport fish species was 0.6 for northern pike, 0.2 for lake trout, 0.1 for walleye from the Yellowknife area; and 0.3 for northern pike, 1.2 for walleye, 0.2 for rainbow trout, and <0.1 for Arctic grayling from the Hay River area. The method proved to be successful in gathering information on sport fishing over a broad area. Results of the survey and comments by anglers will be used in formulating management strategies appropriate to the Yellowknife and Hay River areas"--Abstract, page iv.
