"A systematically structured, ten-digit, computer code for use in the study of the freshwater animals of Newfoundland was created. The code consists of two digits in each of five fields, with each field corresponding to a taxonomic rank. One thousand, three hundred and forty animal taxa and 14 fish stomach content items were assigned codes. These animal taxa consist of: 34 classes, subclasses, or phyla; 70 orders or suborders; 183 families; 342 genera; and 711 species which have been or might be recorded during freshwater investigations in Newfoundland"--Abstract, page iv.
