1985 research catch and effort data on nearshore reef-fishes in the Strait of Georgia B.C. (Statistical Areas 15 and 16) / by L.J. Richards and A.J. Cass.: Fs97-4/1851E-PDF

"In 1984 we began a research program based on the need for stock assessments of nearshore reef-fishes in the Strait of Georgia. The 1985 results are presented in this report, and are compared with the 1984 results and with a small sample from the recreational fishery. Research CPUE data were collected by angling with trolling rods and reels, using frozen herring as bait. Three depth intervals (5-40 m, 41-70 m, and 71-100 m) were fished at most of the 17 sites. CPUE (for all species combined) depended on surface current. However, time of day, depth, weather conditions, sea state and tide did not affect CPUE. Dogfish, copper rockfish, quillback rockfish, yelloweye rockfish and lingcod were the dominant species in the catch. Species composition varied significantly with depth and statistical area, with proportionately more dogfish and yelloweye rockfish, and proportionately fewer quillback rockfish caught in statistical area 15 than in statistical area 16. Compared with the 1984 catch data, there was a significant decrease in the size of copper rockfish and quillback rockfish in 1985. There was no difference in the size of quillback rockfish in the recreational and 1985 research catch, although larger lingcod were sampled from the recreational fishery"--Abstract, page iii.
