"A by-catch survey on the commercial gaspereau (Alosa pseudoharengus), eel (Anguilla rostrata), silverside (Menidia menidia) and smelt (Osmerus mordax) fisheries was sent out to the Conservation and Protection detachment supervisors in every local office of DFO's Gulf Region. The purpose of the study was to: 1) estimate the magnitude of the by-catch of sport fish in commercially set box nets and pots for these four species in the Southern Gulf of St Lawrence; and 2) address the possibility of remedial actions to reduce by-catch in these fisheries. The survey was to be filled out by the fishery officers in consultation with the fishermen and stakeholders implicated in those fisheries. Based on the results of the survey and on the comments received, by-catch is a problem that exists within specific areas of DFO's Gulf Region estuarial fisheries. Recommendations included improving fishing gear selectivity, adding conditions on licences, managing closed times and elimination of specific aspects of the fishery to reduce sport fish by-catch"--Abstract, page vi.
