"MANAB is a manual of abbreviations authorized for use in transmissions over Environment and Climate Change Canada's (ECCC) Telecommunication Networks. Most of the approved abbreviations that may appear in ECCC’s Telecommunication Network are included in MANAB; however, the manual is not a complete reference for encoding or decoding abbreviations used in Canada. Excluded from MANAB are: standard dictionary abbreviations such as A.M., P.M., etc.; standard metric abbreviations such as DAM (for decametre), etc.; standard WMO approved data designators such as SM, SI, UX, etc. In addition to the above, any other term may be used provided that they are: spelled out fully; and well understood by users"--Foreword, page iii.
