A multicultural perspective of breastfeeding in Canada / by Theresa Agnew ; in collaboration with Joanne Gilmore and Pattie Sullivan. : H39-386/1997E-PDF

This research paper examines breastfeeding beliefs and practices among Canada's culturally diverse new-immigrant population. Several cultural communities were surveyed based on current immigration trends. Breastfeeding practices informed by the religious beliefs of Islam are also examined. One key finding is that the process of acculturation greatly affects a mother's decisions about breastfeeding initiation and duration. The aim of this paper is to promote sensitivity and knowledge of differing practices and create an awareness of the process of acculturation so that Canadian health care providers and lactation consultants will be able to encourage and support breastfeeding in a sensitive way across cultures.
