  • This publication about the early years of government printing services is far from a dry documentation of facts on organizational and technological development. It is the story of the "nation's printers," the people in the organization who made and continue to make progress possible through their ability to adapt to the changes that new inventions, techniques and technologies bring to any activity. It describes the people, activities and events that shaped the organization and played such an important part in the working and social lives of its employees. This volume recounts the early history of government printing, from 1752 to the creation of the office of Queen's Printer in 1869. It takes us through the years of the first contract system, the failure of which ultimately led to the establishment of the Department of Public Printing and Stationery in 1886. The introduction gives an overview of present day printing and publishing activities and also includes a special section on the current production of the Hansards. The last section is devoted to the building of the first Printing Bureau in 1889, working in the Bureau, and the introduction of the first linotype machines. For those in the private printing sector, "IMPRESSIONS" reflects the developments and changes in their industry as a whole. For everyone, this story of one of Canada's oldest institutions gives an insight into the impact of many socio-political events which affected the lives of us all.
