Over the past 10 years, insects have annually depleted one third of Canada's annual wood harvest. Forest specialists must apply new technologies, such as nonchemical pest control and biotechnology, to limit the devastation caused by insect pests. Within a context of sustainable forest management, this book reviews new developments in forest insect pest management, focusing on methods that are environmentally friendly and socially acceptable.

It was initiated by the late Dr. Jack Armstrong as a sequel to Aerial Control of Forest Insects in Canada edited by Dr. M. L. Prebble and published by the Canadian Forestry Service, Environment Canada in 1975. This book has taken a broader view of forest pest management than the previous book as numerous important developments in areas other than aerial control have occurred in recent years.
