This information guide summarizes Canada’s recent experience with inflation control, gauges the effectiveness of the monetary policy adopted by the government and the Bank of Canada, and looks at the issues warranting further research. The guide reviews the economic factors in previous decades that prompted Canada to consider decreasing and stabilizing the rate of inflation, discusses the decision to begin inflation targeting following the 1990–1991 recession, and assesses the economic impact this strategy has had since the 1990s.
