“The federal government officially created the Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) program in 1974. Since then, there have been numerous changes to the program, increasing its popularity and encouraging Canadians to save more for their children’s post-secondary education. This background paper highlights the key changes to the RESP program since its inception, along with the rationales and discussions surrounding these modifications. It then summarizes the current program and presents an overview of provincial education savings incentives, as well as the key results achieved since the introduction of RESPs”--Introd., p. 1.
