520 |a"During the summer of 1980, Environment Canada staff conducted site investigations at the abandoned Stirling Mine in Richmond County, Cape Breton. The runoff from the mine site and the primary receiving stream, Strachans Brook, contained elevated levels of lead and zinc. The sediments in Strachan's Brook contained elevated levels of iron, zinc, lead and copper and consisted mainly of mine tailings. Despite these problems, Strachan's Brook downstream of the mine supported some aquatic life including Atlantic Salmon fingerling. The inspection revealed that the tailings dam is eroding in two locations and requires remedial work to prevent the loss of additional mine tailings into the receiving waters"--Summary.
