"Air pollution problems, such as smog and acid rain, result from the release of pollutants into the atmosphere. These pollutants can affect the health of people in Canada, the environment, infrastructure and the economy. The majority of these pollutants are released through human activities, such as the burning of fuels for electricity and heating, transportation, and industrial activities. The indicators on sulphur oxides (SOX), nitrogen oxides (NOX), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), carbon monoxide (CO), ammonia (NH3), fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and black carbon, a component of PM2.5, report emissions released through human activities"--Air pollutant emissions, page 7.
