"This research seeks to clarify the characteristics of the silent speaker population in Canada. Between 2016 and 2021, the number of Indigenous people able to speak an Indigenous language declined, and all Indigenous languages remain at risk. Silent speakers thus represent a valuable reservoir of cultural and linguistic knowledge. Their potential role in language revitalization efforts makes it essential to better understand their characteristics, geographic distribution, and how their numbers have changed over time. Profiling silent speakers can offer insights into patterns of language shift, retention, and opportunities for revitalization.
