| 520 | 3 |a"A bottom trawl survey for rockfish was conducted by the fishing vessel CALEDONIAN off the southwest coast of Vancouver Island from September 9 to 27, 1996. Objectives of the survey were to estimate the relative biomass of the Pacific ocean perch stock in the major statistical Area 3C and a portion of Area 3D, and to collect biological samples for several rockfish species. Biomass estimates from this survey were compared to previous surveys conducted between 1965 and 1972 by the RIV G.B. REED, in 1979 by the FN ARCTIC HARVESTER, and in 1986 by the FN HOWE BAY. Biological information was collected for Pacific ocean perch, (Sebastes alutus), yellowmouth rockfish (S. reedi), redstripe rockfish (S. proriger), splitnose rockfish (S. diploproa), redbanded rockfish (S. babcocki), sharpchin rockfish (S. zacentrus), rougheye rockfish (S. aleutianus), greenstriped rockfish (S. elongatus), shortspine thomyhead (Sebastolobus alascanus), and sablefish (Anoplopomafimbria) caught during the survey. Pacific ocean perch relative biomass was estimated to be between 2,095-2,358 tonnes and 1,630-2,885 tonnes using classical and bootstrap methods, respectively, while shortspine thomyhead relative biomass was estimated to be between 105-117 tonnes and 85-137 tonnes, respectively. Pacific ocean perch was by far the most abundant rockfish species by weight, followed by sharpchin rockfish, and splitnose rockfish"--Abstract, page iii. |
