Assessment of rivers in the Outer Bay of Fundy, Inner Bay of Fundy, and Nova Scotia Southern Upland Atlantic Salmon Designatable Units : suitability for monitoring escaped aquaculture salmon in the Bay... : Fs97-6/3783E-PDF

"Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar) in the Bay of Fundy are split into three genetically and ecologically distinct Designatable Units - Outer Bay of Fundy (OBoF), Inner Bay of Fundy (IBoF), and Nova Scotia Southern Upland (SU). All three groups have been designated as Endangered by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada and abundances are at or below 5% of the conservation requirement for the species. Interactions with escaped domestic salmon from aquaculture operations has been identified as a significant risk to Bay of Fundy Atlantic Salmon populations through genetic (i.e. interbreeding) and non-genetic interactions. Altantic Salmon aquaculture is a dominant industry in the Bay of Fund in both New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, and even with improvements to technology and standards in the industry, escape events continue to occur. Escaped aquaculture salmon have been detected in Bay of Fundy since shortly after the introduction of the industry to the region, however monitoring for escaped aquaculture fish is opportunistic and relies on documentation from monitoring and research activities with other objectives"--Abstract, page xiii.
