"This paper provides a detailed review of the literature pertaining to protective custody. Current protective custody policies and procedures from two jurisdictions, the Correctional Service of Canada and the Ontario Ministry of Correctional Service, are reviewed. A descriptive profile of the protective custody inmate is presented. Other issues discussed include the means by which protective custody inmates live in protection, the quality of the environment, human rights, and staff attitudes. Finally, the paper reflects on means by which the protective custody population might be managed and reduced in number"--Abstract, page ii.
