Exploratory intertidal clam surveys in British Columbia - 1998 / by G.E. Gillespie and N.F. Bourne. : Fs97-4/2508E-PDF

"Results of a 1998 exploratory intertidal clam survey to assess populations of commercially important clams on selected beaches in the North Coast District of British Columbia (B.C.) are presented. This survey was a continuation of exploratory clam surveys begun in 1990 to assess intertidal clam resources in the North Coast. Primary focus in this survey was an assessment of Manila clam, Venerupis philippinarum, populations and dispersal since they are the most important intertidal clam species at present in the commercial fishery. No commercially exploitable stocks of Manila clams were found in this survey but a population was found at the head of Laredo Inlet 52° 58' N latitude, the farthest north the species is known to occur in B.C. Caamaño Sound appears to limit further northward dispersal of Manila clams in B.C. Limited abundance and population structure information was also obtained on other potentially important commercial clam species including, butter, Saxidonius giganteus, littleneck, Protothaca staminea, soft-shell, Mya arenaria, cockles, Clinodardium nuttallii, and Macoma sp. Factors affecting dispersal, abundance, establishment of populations and culture of Manila clams in the North Coast are discussed. The potential for commercial harvest of butter, littleneck, soft-shell clams and cockles is also discussed"--Abstract, page x.
