"A Prairie Fish Habitat Management Workshop was held at Hecla Island, Manitoba on June 3-5, 1998. The workshop was sponsored by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Habitat Management Division (DFO-HM) with input and cooperation from the provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario. The workshop objectives were: to share information and experiences related to provincial and DFO habitat management and science programs; to identify areas in which common approaches to problems and exchange of information could be usefully shared to avoid duplication and overlap of effort; to identify common challenges that affect inland provinces, and to identify priority challenges that require a collaborative response by habitat management practitioners in the four central Canadian provinces; to identify actions and roles necessary to address the challenges; to create a foundation for future action, including an ongoing steering process. Separate breakout sessions dealing with 15 pre-selected topics were held involving 70 workshop participants. The workshop topics centered on key issues and activities with the potential to impact fishes and fish habitats in the four provinces.
