"A survey of red sea urchin populations in parts of Pacific Fishery Management (PFM) Area 14 (Comox, Denman Island and Hornby Island), was conducted in June 1999. A total of 61 randomly placed transects were surveyed by SCUBA divers. Densities and biomass were estimated on a per PFM sub-area basis. Density ranged from 0.20 to 0.79 urchins per m²; overall mean density was 0.59 urchins per m². Biomass ranged from 60.2 to 281.5 g per m²; overall mean biomass was 165.4 g per m². Size frequency distributions showed relatively strong recruitment in some PFM sub-areas. Overall, 22.2% of the total urchins measured were ≤50mm test diameter (TD) whereas 38.6% were of legal size (≥100mm TD) for the commercial fishery"--Abstract, page iii.
