Area 20 commercial salmon fishery by-catch monitoring program, 1994 And 1995 / by L. Hop Wo, P.J. Ryall and D.M. Lewi. : Fs97-4/2661E-PDF
"In 1994 and 1995, a by-catch monitoring program was initiated to determine the impact of the Juan de Fuca commercial sockeye and pink salmon fisheries on non-targeted salmon species. The by-catch monitoring program provided information which aided in reducing the occurrence of incidental catch during the fishery. Estimated incidental catch was compiled in-season and tracked using a yellow line - red line catch ceiling approach. Actions to reduce by-catch were discussed with fishing industry advisors and included voluntary non-retention, reduction in fishing time and a proposed sequence of zone closures. The total annual catch of incidental species during these fisheries was as follows: 1994 (seine and gillnet) - 121,870 coho, 680 chum, 8,769 chinook, 35 steelhead; 1995 (seine only) - 31,061 coho, 1,409 chum, 528 chinook, 8 steelhead. Monitoring data were collected by examining the catch from seine fishing vessels. Monitoring data consisted of observed numbers of fish (by species) caught in individual sets, date and time of set, and number of sets made up until the observation time. The number of observations recorded for 1994 and 1995 were 242 and 124, respectively. …"--Abstract, page vi.
