Thirty-nine purse seine sets were made in Statistical Management Areas 6, 7, 8 and 9, from Meyers Passage in the north to Fish Egg Inlet in the south. The survey serves to address information gaps on the distribution, abundance, size and feeding habits of juvenile herring in these areas. Twenty-two species of fish were recorded in the purse seine catches with herring being the most frequently captured. A total of 7225 juvenile herring were measured and weighed resulting in a distinctly bimodal length frequency distribution representing age-0+ and age-1+ fish. Age-0+, age-1+ and age-2+ or older herring occurred in 87.2%, 76.9% and 35.9% of the sets respectively. A total of 224 herring stomachs and 46 possible herring predator stomachs were analysed for stomach content. Twenty oblique plankton tows were performed during the survey. Juvenile calanoid copepods and Pseudocalanus minutus were the most prominent organisms encountered"--Abstract, page v. |
