Escapement monitoring of adult salmon using digital video technology in the Kwinageese River, 2002 / prepared by D.E. Miller, R.C. Bocking and B.E. Baxter. : Fs97-4/2711E-PDF

"In 2002, underwater digital video technology was used to monitor adult chinook, sockeye, coho salmon and steelhead in the Kwinageese River, British Columbia. This technique used methodology that does not trap or handle any fish, nor does it alter fish movement, as does a typical weir. Fish were directed through a 1.2 m wide video-viewing box containing underwater cameras with the use of a floating weir on a track and trolley system spanning the width of the river. Fish passage through the video viewing box was recorded 24 hours per day with a time-lapse digital video recorder using bath traditional time-lapse recording and motion detection recording techniques. Motion detection mode recorded short video clips only when motion, within a specified portion of the video view, exceeded a defined threshold. When fish passage rates were low and motion detection properly configured, this feature saved a great deal of review time. This was the second year of testing digital video technology for this application on the Kwinageese River. … Accurate adult escapement and mark rate information on the Kwinageese will allow managers to estimate system wide salmon escapement and harvest rates, as well as, egg-fry survival rates when combined with fall hydro-acoustic estimates. Additional run-timing data will assist managers in managing Nass sockeye fisheries to protect weak stocks"--Abstract, page vi.
